Cairo (transliteration: Al-Qāhirah), which means "The Vanquisher" or "The Triumphant", is the capital city of Egypt. While Al-Qahirah is the official name of the city, in Egyptian Arabic it commonly shares the dialect's name for the country, transliteration: Masr. It has a metropolitan area population of about 15.75 million people.[1] Cairo is the sixteenth most populous metropolitan area in the world. It is also the most populous metropolitan area in Africa .

Kairo (al-Qāhira – „die Starke“) ist die Hauptstadt Ägyptens und die größte Stadt der arabischen Welt. Von Ägyptern wird die Stadt oftmals auch einfach mit dem Landesnamen – مصر‎, hocharabisch Misr, ägyptisch-arabisch Masr – bezeichnet.

Kairo hat 7.734.614 Einwohner in der eigentlichen Stadt und ist mit 15.502.478 Einwohnern in der Agglomeration (Stand jeweils 1. Januar 2005) neben Lagos in Nigeria die größte Metropolregion in Afrika. In Ägypten existiert allerdings keine Meldepflicht, weswegen die angegebenen Einwohnerzahlen Hochrechnungen auf Basis der Volkszählungsergebnisse darstellen. Inoffizielle Schätzungen geben (Ende 2006) bis zu 25 Millionen Einwohner für den Großraum an, was nahezu ein Drittel der Gesamtbevölkerung Ägyptens bedeuten würde.
