An Ovoo at the Shiliin Bogd Uul mountain peak
The extinct volcano is sacred to many Mongolians: the spirit of any man (man only!) who climbs it, especially at sunrise will be revived. The region is stunning, isolated and very close to the Chinese border to Inner Mongolia.
An Ovoo is a type of shamanistic cairn found in Mongolia, usually made from rocks or from wood. They serve mainly as religious sites, used in worship of the mountains and the sky as well as in Buddhist ceremonies, but often are also landmarks.
