Tele-compressing 50 Years - A Kennedy Center Impression
Seen from the canopied walkway leading to the performing arts annex known as The Reach,
the River Terrace Promenade, running the entire length of the John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts, is tele-compressed into the neighboring Watergate complex, just upriver.
The 50-year connection: The Kennedy Center is currently celebrating its 50th Anniversary Season. It was also
50 years ago in the Watergate office building (connected to the Watergate Hotel seen beyond the Kennedy Center's columns) that a botched burglary of Democratic National Committee headquarters in 1972, an attempted cover-up, and Congressional investigations into it were to lead to the resignation of then U.S. President Richard M. Nixon in 1974.
Somehow, seeing that tele-compression in my camera's viewfinder
made those 50 years seem a lot shorter in the memory's rearview mirror.
